Just in...CATS ARE KILLERS! And, yes, we're talking about your little fluffball. And you thought when you let your little guy out at night, he was just innocently patroling the grounds? Nope, far from it.
The University of Georgia and National Geographic attached tiny video cameras to house cats JUST LIKE YOURS and sent them out into the wild JUST LIKE YOU DO. And you know they found? About a third of the time, cats kill time by KILLING WILDLIFE. Turns out cats averaged one kill for every 17 hours outdoors, or 2.1 kills per week.
And who is their prey? It's a wide array, including lizards, voles, chipmunks, frogs, snakes and birds...lots and lots of birds. And remember, the next time little kitty deposits a mouse carcass on your doorstep, that's only about a quarter of their overall haul.
All in all, cats kill 4 billion animals a year, including 500 million birds.
