To watch Debra Argel-Bastian traverse the country on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle one would ask why she would endure a grueling 6,000 mile trek this summer. She would shrug it off. She knows why she rides. And the honor it brings to her son and the many other young men and women of our armed forces who gave up their lives on the field of battle, leaving behind their mothers and other relatives like Debra, to sort out the future without them.
Her son, Captain Derek Argel, USAF CCT, was a warrior's warrior who never took the easy way out. He was a member of an elite Special Operations command unit. He excelled in every aspect of his assignments but was killed by the enemy during a very important mission in Iraq, Memorial Day 2005.
Debra also rides in memory of Major Brian Downs, SSGT Casey Crate, Capt.
Jeremy Fresques, and Capt. Ali Abass who, with her son, went on their last mission together.
The feeling of loss never truly vanishes, but Debra presses on, having worked tirelessly on behalf of other military families, for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. She is determined that the memories and more importantly, the children and families of these heroes do not suffer further. She has begun an effort to raise the funds and awareness necessary to make sure the kids left behind have a decent future.
She is riding for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF), which provides college scholarship grants, based on need, along with financial aid and educational counseling to the children of Special Operations personnel who were killed in an operational mission or training accident. For over 27 years, they've stood by our heroes' families and earned the highest rating of four stars on the Charity Navigator.
Debra's mission is clear. That is why she rides. That is who she is now. The warrior's mom will begin her journey in Lompoc, California on August 15th, and intends to finish back home after traveling through Brea; San Diego; Yuma, AZ; Tucson; Las Cruces, NM; Roswell; Amarillo, TX; Branson, MO; Springfield, IL; St. Charles; Green Bay, WI; Milwaukee, Colorado Springs, CO; Junction City, KS; Las Vegas, NV; Hesperia, CA, Edwards AFB, and back home.
During this month long trip she will attempt to bring the word to other veterans and families in remote locations that this Gold star mom and other Americans care about them and is willing to do what it takes to draw attention to their unique needs. She has arranged several speaking engagements along the route with barbeques and other fundraisers.
Your assistance in spreading her message of real hope for our finest defenders is greatly appreciated.
And if you happen to be out driving and a determined lady wearing a flag shirt rolls past you on her motorcycle, give her a wave and let her know you are thankful that she raised a son willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for us all.
