A UK manufacturer said it would normally sell around 3,000 pairs of bedsocks a month between October and February, but this October sold more than 9,000 pairs. Here, a pair of warm-looking socks.
LONDON - Cash-strapped consumers in austerity Britain trying to hold down rising heating bills are rushing out to buy socks designed to be worn in bed, according to UK manufacturer HJ Hall.
HJ Hall said it would normally sell around 3,000 pairs of bedsocks a month between October and February, but this October sold more than 9,000 pairs. 86 percent of the people it polled said they were buying the socks to delay putting on the heating.
Fresh rises in British gas and electricity prices this autumn have even persuaded younger consumers such as newlyweds and students to turn off the radiator and cosy up with the kind of passionless nightwear that granny used to swear by.

Vice President Joe Biden makes a guest apperance on NBC's "Parks and Recreation" next week as the longtime political crush of Amy Poehler's Leslie Knope.
Newly reelected VP Joe Biden will make a guest appearance on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” next week as the sexiest man alive … according to Leslie Knope.
Knope, played by Amy Poehler, is a political superfan who once said that her ideal man would have “the brains of George Clooney in the body of Joe Biden.”
EW.com reported that Poehler’s character will meet her political crush on the episode that airs Nov. 15.
HOLLYWOOD DIRT:
The "Transformers" film franchise is getting some serious muscle.
Mark Wahlberg has been cast in "Transformers 4," which will hit theaters on June 27, 2014.
Director Michael Bay made the announcement Thursday evening. Bay and Wahlberg recently collaborated on "Pain and Gain" -- a movie about bodybuilders turned criminals set for release next April.
"Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on 'Pain and Gain' and I’m so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the 'Transformers’ legacy," said Bay.
The first three "Transformers" films have been critically panned but box office successes, earning more than $2.6 billion worldwide.
But don't expect to see Shia LaBeouf reprising his role. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter in August that he is done with big blockbusters, saying the studios "stick a finger up your ass."
What do you think of the casting news? Tell toofab in the comments below.
And while you have to wait until 2014 for the next "Transformers," some major sequels are in theaters this holiday season. Click on the "Launch Gallery" below to find out when "Breaking Dawn -- Part II" and "The Hobbit" are in theaters.
Jennifer Lawrence has no desire to succumb to the pressures of looking rail-thin in Hollywood.
The 22-year-old Oscar nominee told the December issue of Elle that she has quite the healthy appetite and isn’t willing to ever sacrifice her health for her career.
“I eat like a caveman, I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors," she told the magazine. “In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress, I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach.”

“I’m never going to starve myself for a part … I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner," she explained to the magazine, referring to her character Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games,” a role that has catapulted her career to international fame.
"That’s something I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong- not thin and underfed.”

Lindsay Lohan has officially pulled out of her "20/20" interview with Barbara Walters ... and TMZ has learned it was all because her new PR team didn't want Babs to grill Lilo like a cheeseburger over the ongoing investigation in her car crash.
Lindsay was scheduled to sit down with Walters this week ... and we're told when she originally agreed to the interview, it was supposed to focus on her new movie, "Liz & Dick."
But sources close to the actress tell us ... in the past week, producers made it clear to Lohan that Barbara wanted to talk about her personal life as well ... including allegations that she lied to police about the June car crash on Pacific Coast Highway.
We're told Lindsay's new PR team, Rogers & Cowan, felt it would be a mistake to put Lindsay in the hot seat ... where she could possibly say something that could screw up her case ... so they pulled the plug.
